English Early Keyboard Music:
William Walond

William Walond (1719-1768)

William was born in Oxford. He served there as assistant organist and copyist at New College and Christ Church Cathedral.

For four years he was Assistant Organist of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford in 1757. He published two sets of voluntaries for the organ or harpsichord (op. 1, c. 1752 and op. 2, 1758; I think 10 altogether) plus some church music. The music is accessible and attractive, and the ones I've played lay easily under the fingers.

He was succeeded at his death by his eldest son (c1750-1836), who was christened William after his father. Of his fourteen children, William became the last 'Organist' of Chichester Cathedral, before the post was merged with 'Master of the Choristers' in 1801.
