After Conservative M.P. Edward Crowder passed away, Adrian Stephens, a local dentist, decides to run for the Conservative nomination. For Adrian, it's tax cuts and initiative which will put the country back on track. After the rest of the outsiders have been wiped out, it's down to two facing the final hurdle (inspection by the general membership) for the nomination: Adrian and one of his oldest friends - Tony Graham, a millionaire builder.

But on the day of his daughter's wedding, Adrian's past comes back to haunt him, putting his marriage and political career in jeopardy....

With Bob Peck [Adrian Stephens], Rosemary Martin [Pauline Stephens, Adrian's Wife], Juliet Stevenson [Virginia Stephens, Adrian's Oldest Daughter, a London Lawyer], Clive Merrison [Tony Graham, a Millionaire Builder, One of Adrian's Oldest Friends], Clare Travers-Deacon [Emma Stephens, Adrian's 14-year-old Daughter], Richard Wilson [Mr. Hopkins, the Constituency Association Chairman], Elizabeth Rider [Alice, Adrian's Mistress], Crawford Logan [Hugh, Claire's Husband-to-be], Margaret Ward [Mrs. Hopkins], Susie Brann [Claire Stephens / The Maid], Paul Gregory [Alice's Brother], and Brian Hewlett [The Foreman / The Catering Manager].

Other parts were played by Kim Wall, Peter Howell, Ian Thomson, Steven Harrold, and John Samson.
