Philip Burton, radio producer


Philip Burton (P. H. Burton) BBC Radio Producer and Writer (30 November 1904 – 28 January 1995)


Philip Burton was a Welsh teacher of English who became a writer and radio producer and theatre director. Philip Burton taught Richard Jenkins at Port Talbot Secondary School, Jenkins went on to become Richard Burton. Richard Jenkins became Philip Burton's ward, having failed to adopt him.

Granton Street... 1937
Monday 15th February 1937 20;35 Regional Programme Western Characters: Mrs. Davies, Mary, Evan Thomas, Will, John, Tom Davies, Uncle Jim, Sybil, Mrs. Granton, Edward Granton. The action of the play takes place in the front-room of the Davies' home in Granton Street, Abemansant, a mining town in Glamorgan, during a Parliamentary bye-election. The play was adapted for broadcasting and produced by John Richmond.


The Last Battle...1941
First broadcast: Wednesday 9th April 1941, 22:00 on BBC Home Service Basic. The scene is a mining valley in South Wales. The central character of this new radio play is John Davies , a South Wales miner whose whole life has been spent in fighting for the right as he sees it. While he is on Home Guard night duty outside the colliery where he has worked for so many years, he recalls scenes from the past varying from an old-time cinema show to a trade-union meeting. John Davies: Ivor Maddox, Maggie Davies, his wife:Rachel Thomas, Tom Davies, their son: Vivian Allen, Wil Bevan: Lyn Joshua, Lizzie Bevan: Betty Cooper; with Tom Jones , P. H. Return Journey... 1947
First broadcast: Sunday 15th June 1947, 19:00 on BBC Home Service Basic. Dylan Thomas to Swansea. In this series, the return journey is made by Dylan; he goes to the place best known to him in childhood. Produced by P. H. Burton.
