This is the commercial 'ballerina' type red crab; flowers early, with lots of carmine coloured blossom; large & heavily scented. The fruit are large, purple skinned and red fleshed. Rather tart; good for crab apple jelly. 'Ballerina' means that it grows with few if any side breaks - they are sometimes called 'pole trees'.
Bees unusually keen on the blossom.
