‘Somebody’s Sister, Somebody’s Daughter’
by GW Theatre Co. & Mike Harris

Mike Harris, well-known radio writer, introduces a new play about a growing problem in parts of our society....

‘Somebody’s Sister, Somebody’s Daughter’ by GW Theatre company, and writer/director Mike Harris, is a powerful new drama about sexual exploitation and street grooming, aimed at 15-25 year olds, and is now available for booking. Anyone interested in the subject can come along to one of our pilot shows in the North West and Oxfordshire both before and after Easter. Please contact gwtheatre@aol.com for more information.

‘Somebody’s Sister, Somebody’s Daughter’ goes behind the front page mug-shots to the human stories of three young people: Chloe, the 15 year old girl from an ordinary family, who is caught up in the web of a vicious grooming gang. Sara, the half-Asian best friend who saves her, and Javid, the young man who risks everything to help Sara get Chloe out of the grip of his ‘Uncle’ Adeem and his ‘business partner’ Phil. Without preaching, or being sexually graphic in anyway, but with empathy, anger and surprising humour, ‘Somebody’s Sister, Somebody’s Daughter’ dramatises the dangers and the complex issues involved in this most sensitive of subjects.

The play is also available for professionals and comes with a workers’ pack containing further information, along with suggested lessons for use before and after performances. Each performance is followed by a ‘hot-seating’ session in which the actors come back in character so that audiences can question their actions. All the pilot shows will be attended by a worker from Barnardos who is available to talk to young people individually or in groups after the performances.

GW Theatre Co and Sony Award winning script writer/director Mike Harris, have been producing powerful, thought provoking, issue-based dramas for young people for twenty years, working in collaboration with young people, families and most major social agencies. This pilot project is part-funded and backed by two local authorities in Greater Manchester and one in Oxfordshire, and several more are likely to come online soon. A national conference about street grooming led by Oldham MBC is planned, with this project as its centre piece. A university-led evaluation of the project is also on the cards.
