PLAY SERIES

THE SYBIL THORNDIKE FESTIVAL (1967-68)

I was asked to arrange this as a tribute to the great actress. She chose six favourite plays in which to star. They were:

ST. JOAN, by Bernard Shaw. Dame Sybil was joined by Alan Wheatley, Clive Morton, Michael Spice, Ian McKellan.

JANE CLEGG, by St. John Ervine

THE DISTAFF SIDE, by John Van Druten. This also featured Lydia Sherwood & Grizelda Hervey.

A PASSAGE TO INDIA, by E.M.Forster. This also starred Jill Balcon, Carleton Hobbs, Zia Mohyeddin, Frank Duncan, Garard Green.

CAPTAIN BRASSBOUND'S CONVERSION, by Bernard Shaw. It also starred Cecil Parker, Gabriel Woolf and John Justin.

THE FOOLISH GENTLEWOMAN, by Margery Sharp.

THE FLORA ROBSON FESTIVAL
Following the success of the SYBIL THORNDIKE FESTIVAL I was asked to set up a similar series for Dame Flora. She chose:

BONAVENTURE by Charlotte Hastings. This also featured Monica Grey and Dorothy Holmes-Gore
THE RETURN, by Bridget Boland. This also starred Denys Blakelock and Gwen Berryman.
REBECCA, by Daphne du Maurier. Also starred Richard Pasco, Jane Asher.
BLACK CHIFFON and THE RIVALS - these were directed for me by David Davis and Charles Lefaux respectively.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SHERLOCK HOLMES, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Almost the whole canon of the Holmes short stories was dramatised by Michael and Mollie Hardwicke. It starred Carleton Hobbs as Holmes and Norman Shelley as Dr. Watson.

N.D. adds: This is for many the definitive version of the Sherlock Holmes tales. Here's an approximate listing of the episodes.
