Rudyard Kipling - The Jungle Book

BBC Radio 5

"The Jungle Book" follows Mowgli, an Indian boy who is raised by wolves from infancy. He learns self-sufficiency and wisdom from the jungle animals but this does not temper his escapades that reflect his fun-loving, daredevil spirit.

How could a human raised by wolves not be adventurous! Especially when his best friends are a wise bear named Baloo, the panther Bagheera, and the python Kaa! Blessed with a quick wit, a sharp instinct and an optimistic outlook on life, Mowgli learns to overcome adversity and survive in the jungle. This is particularly challenging with a tenacious enemy like Shere Khan, a Royal Bengal tiger. Mowgli also has to defend himself against the Bandar-Log, or monkey people, who live in the forest treetops and pay no heed to the laws of the jungle.

Mowgli's adventures unfold not only in the lush tropical forest, but also amidst the ruins of splendid Indian royal forts, temples, waterfalls and the Waingunga River....

Dramatised by Michelene Wandor in five parts from Rudyard Kipling's short stories collection, "The Jungle Book", which were first published in magazines in 1893/1894 before being collected and published in book form in 1894. This series was nominated for Best Radio Dramatisation, Writers' Guild Award, 1994.

Music by John Mayer.

Directed by Chris Wallis.
