In 1979, teenage Karen mysteriously falls into a coma. She remains this way for 18 years, during which time her daughter is born and her boyfriend, Richard, struggles to make a life without her. Suddenly, Karen comes round – a miracle recovery. She starts hearing voices in her head that tell her the world is about to end, but Karen doesn't believe them until, one day, the entire population of the world falls into a permanent sleep and Karen is faced with a terrible choice.

Adapted for radio by Dan Rebellato from Douglas Coupland's 1998 novel, "Girlfriend in a Coma".
