Neither of them is what she seems; it's difficult to say much about the plot without introducing spoilers but it's safe to report that one of them becomes involved in unexpected criminal activity. Middle-aged Joy was played by Brid Brennan and young Umi by Tamara Lawrance, with Sean Murray as the steward, Ryan Early, Nahel Tzegai, Ryan Whittle and Lauren Cornelius. The producer was Mary Peate. 2 Aug 16: Poetry In Motion
By Katie Hims. Five strangers board a train bound for Manchester. They have never met. We hear the thoughts of each person and these soon move from practical matters to inner demons: anxieties over presenting a vital pitch; running away from one's family; the death of a child. Katie Hims brings together the separate story lines and by the time the passengers disembark they all feel a little less lonely. (precis of Jane Anderson's remarks in RT). Valerie - Rachel Davies, Leonard - Alan Williams, Karla - Karla Crome, Reece - Ashley Kumar, Bridie - Adie Allen, Cashier - Kirsty Oswald, Train announcer - Nick Underwood. Producer: Mary Peate. Rpt. 24 Jul 18.

POETRY IN MOTION by Katie Hims (R4 1415 2 Aug 16) was a good example of a play which can only work on radio. Five people board a train bound for Manchester and sit in the same carriage; they have never met before. But instead of hearing what they say, we hear their thoughts, and these soon move from practical matters to what is troubling each one of them: how to present a new play to a producer; the trauma of running away from one's family; the death of a child. The play is rounded off beautifully with a cheerful ending. The five were played by Rachel Davies (Valerie), Alan Williams (Leonard), Karla Crome (Karla), Ashley Kumar (Reece) and Adie Allen (Bridie) and the producer was Mary Peate. (.....ND, Diversity Website review, Sep 2016)

THE INTERROGATION....2015
Another series of these excellent dramas by Roy Williams began in September. (R4, 1415, three episodes beginning 2 Sep 15) This is becoming an impressive set of crime stories, with Kenneth Cranham and Alex Lanipekun delivering excellent performances as DS Matthews and DC Armitage. The last series left us with Matthews and Armitage being held hostage at gunpoint; then we heard a gunshot. It seems that Armitage took the bullet, but now after several months in hospital he's back. For some reason, however, he's not at all happy at seeing his boss again. Their relationship seems to be in a very poor state until they conduct an interrogation together. Production of the series is by Mary Peate. (.....ND, Diversity Website review, Sep 2015)
