Josephine Tewson Radio Appearances

Josephine Tewson on the Radio (Drama, Comedy and Interviews)

Actor, born 26 February 1931; died 18 August 2022

It is more than a decade since I met Josephine but she really bowled me over with her charm and generosity. Better known for her tv roles, in which she hid her beauty and personality in very subdued characters, she also appeared on Radio, frequently in comedy related roles. Here are some programmes in which she appeared. The mark -> indicates the first date of a series.

Actors appreciate it when working with a "giving actor"; it makes it so much easier for their performance. Josephine was a giver.

The transformation when she took on a character was astonishing - as a result many will think of her as downtrodden, unassuming, rather dowdy - not the real Josephine. Her "aged up" appearance started with a Stoppard stage play when age 38. Josephine came to keep her aged and downtrodden character onscreen - it was NOT her. (Clive Dunn played an old man for many decades!)

She said nothing about her radio work but it undoubtedly gave her some of the more serious acting she enjoyed. She loved live audiences and theatre performances.
